Ep. 41 - We're Just No Threat is the forty-first episode of Hand Jumper.
Plot[]
Sayeon is in Ahn's office in the third Corps headquarters. Sayeon is reminded of her aberrancy test in Episode 3. Ahn tells Sayeon that Iseul and Min wanted to stay in the medical ward with Sayeon, but were sent away. Ahn then asks how Sayeon is doing, to which she replies that she's tired. Ahn explains that Sayeon's body is not used to using a lot of essence, and compares it to a rubber band which can snap if it is used too strongly. Ahn blames Miyeon Sang for not teaching Sayeon this. She also explains that essence functions as a reserve which aberrants tap into and draw out. While all living things have essence, only aberrants can choose what to do with it. Ahn says that healing oneself, enhancing its strength, and using one's gift all uses essence from the same source, which can lead to exhaustion, as happened to Sayeon during the final match. Once in the infirmary, a healer gave some of her essence to Sayeon, healing her.
Sayeon notices that Ahn is a good explainer, and asks whether officers with yellow ties are healers. Ahn tells her that aberrants with yellow gifts do well in a supportive role, but usually are not good at combat, which is why they take different jobs in the Corps from the others. Ahn says that on their own, aberrants with yellow essence are no threat. Ahn tries to send Sayeon to the office of Instructor Sang, but Sayeon asks Ahn why she and Min look so similar (have white eyes and hair). Ahn explains that if, as a child, one is repeatedly drained of essence, one's hair and eyes lose all pigmentation. While most children do not survive this treatment, aberrants are more resilient. Sayeon asks why anyone would drain a child of their essence, and Ahn explains that this is in order to create rapture.
The perspective shifts to Iseul, Min, and Ryujin. Iseul and Min are arm wrestling. Iseul is struggling. Ryujin remembers the moment of Ahn entering to pick up Sayeon in the infirmary, and we see Ryujin's thoughts at that moment. Ryujin thought that it was strange that Ahn, a level 8 officer, would bother to visit Sayeon, but Sayeon doesn't even notice how strange that is. Ahn dismisses Ryujin from the room, and Ryujin thinks about how strange Sayeon is, as a whole. Both her behaviour at the warehouse and in the capture-the-flag event disturb Ryujin, who doesn't know how Sayeon seemed to become so ruthless so quickly without realizing it. Ryujin wonders why the higher-level officers are taking an interest in her, and wonders whether perhaps, Sayeon's family has a criminal history.
Sayeon arrives in Sang's office. Sang congratulates Sayeon on her victory and hands her the tie clip to signify her move to becoming a level 2 trainee. Then, Sang confronts Sayeon, saying "Sayeon Lee, you're the daughter of an aberrant criminal by the name of Sara Lee, aren't you?"
