Essence is the life force that circulates in the human body. The surplus of essence in Aberrants is what allows them to activate and use their gifts. Essence comes in eight colors, with each color corresponding to a different type of ability.

Contrary to popular belief, essence does not constantly circulate through out the body; it's a reserve of energy that must be tapped into and pulled into parts of the body that the user wishes to strengthen. By training diligently the user will be able to access and use more essence.
All living things possess essence, which helps fuel their basic functions. Essence reserves for ordinary lifeforms are small compared to Aberrants and cannot be used for anything besides fueling basic functions. This distinguishes Aberrants from all other organisms on Earth, as they can choose to manipulate their essence.
Essence colors are hereditary. For example, Sayeon and Samin Lee both inherited teal essence from their mother. It is suggested that the amount of essence that an aberrant possesses is inherited through ones bloodline, which has caused exceptionally powerful Aberrant families to arise.
Types[]
There are eight different colors of essence, each with their own unique properties. These colors are orange, red, purple, blue, yellow, green, teal and white.

Orange Essence[]
Orange essence affects objects but is intangible.

- Iseul Kim's gift makes objects float.
- Dahee Eun's gift makes its user fly.
- Taeho Gyeon's gift creates explosions when his bomb comes into contact with objects.
- Black's gift creates fire out of essence to burn objects.
Red essence[]
Red essence enhances the user's body but is intangible.
- Ryujin Kang is the only Aberrant so far shown to have red essence. In Ep.47 - Chesspieces, Ryujin's essence seemed to enhance her strength and speed to such a degree that a single punch from her knocked out Sayeon Lee for over half an hour. In chapter 70 it was revealed that Ryujin's gift is blood manipulation.

Purple essence[]
Purple essence is intangible and distorts perception.

- Tsubaki Sumishiro's gift creates multiple illusion clones of objects.
- Penrose's gift distorts reality.

Blue essence[]
Blue essence is tangible and creates objects.

- Juni Chang's gift creates ribbons from surfaces.
- Jungwoo Do's gift creates a spear out of essence.
- Minnie's gift generates a shield out of essence.
- Jungwoo gift can create a floating platform.
Yellow essence[]
Yellow essence is intangible and affects others' essence.
Examples[]
- Officer Ahn can use her gift to control the essence of others, such as forcibly activating it.
- Taehee Tak's gift gives teammates a huge amount of essence.
- Healers have yellow essence and can heal by transferring parts of their essence to others.

Green essence[]
Green essence is tangible and augments the user's body.

- Min Woo's gift creates a blade on his arm.
- Instructor Sang's gift creates a body armor.
- Jiwook's gift creates an explosive blade on his arm.
Teal essence[]
Teal essence is "impractical" according to Instructor Sang and does "impossible" things. It is intangible.

- Sayeon Lee can use her gift to go back in time for a short period of time by snapping her fingers.
- An unnamed coworker of Instructor Sang had the ability to talk to birds.
White essence[]
We have almost no information about white essence, only that it is used by "godlings" and is the strongest essence color.
Trivia[]
- Aberrants appear to be able to breathe in their essence colors when smoking. (Ep. 23 - Play Dirty)
- Officer Ahn's tie color being yellow may be related to the color of her essence (Ep. 3 - Final Test), a notable difference from the red and blue ties worn by the rest of the Corps (Ep. 6 - The Instructor)
- According to Officer Ahn, yellow essence users' jobs are different from other essence color users, because yellow essence isn't suitable for combat.
