Ryujin Kang is a Level 3 trainee within the Aberrant Corps. Before she was forced to join the Corps, Ryujin was imprisoned for killing an Corps Officer. She is currently a member of Cell 4 alongside Iseul Kim, Min Woo and Sayeon Lee.

Appearance

Ryujin Kang is a short teenage girl with chin-length wavy purple hair and grey eyes. Before joining the Corps, she is shown to be wearing a red and black half zip sweater. Ryujin often wears a white baseball cap, she has a scar on her right hand and a big scar on her right shoulder (Ep. 48)

Personality

Ryujin comes off as quite callous, arrogant and blunt. She's quick to be rude and shows an attitude, muttering sarcastic comments regularly and also having a short temper. Being a thug, she's often rebellious and dislikes authorities, shown to be sucky about being in the corps.

Ryujin can be smart and knows when something's up. She's brave and adapted to danger, making her a capable person. She'll quickly call things out and won't take nonsense. She is more laid back and cool, Ryujin fights for people she cares about and she's naturally authentic.

History

As of now, little is known of Ryujin's history except that she grew up in a “Nest”, where she viewed the members as her family. She had an intimate relationship with a girl named Jiwon, who looked after Ryujin and helped patch up her signature white hat with the iconic "x" embroidery. Jiwon was murdered at some point after the Nest was attacked by the Corps and before Ryujin was sent to prison.

She was sent to prison for a year by the Corps after killing a member of the aberrant corps and given an essence cuff set at maximum strength. At the age of 18, the corps gave her the choice between joining the corps as a trainee or being executed.

It was revealed that at some point in her childhood, Ryujin was a member of The Concordat, one of the three most powerful crime syndicates, where she was taught music and learned to keep to her own business. It is uncertain whether the “Nest” where Ryujin grew up in belonged to The Concordat or not.

Powers and Abilities

Gift

Ryujin has red essence, which is known to enhance its user's body. Her gift, which is revealed in episode 70, turns out to be blood manipulation.

Ryujin’s gift gives her the freedom to control and solidify her own blood, both inside and outside of her body, into different shapes, forms as her own will. Ryujin was shown to be highly proficient at using her gift, as she’s capable of utilizing it for both offense and defense or other purposes like detaining. Her gift is deemed as very versatile by Father Hope.

Battle Prowess

Essence Control: Although still suffering the negative effects from wearing a maximized essence cuff for a long period, it was implied that Ryujin’s enhanced physical abilities when activated her essence is remarkably impressive. Ryujin was able to throw a metal stick strong enough that it pierced a concrete wall and left Butcher in awe. Iseul also described how Ryujin was able to move extremely fast in a blink of an eye to deliver a blow that knocked Sayeon out in their practice fight.

Hand to Hand Combat: Despite avoiding fights for personal reasons, Ryujin actually has plenty of combat experience. She also has shown to have great intuition and calculation in hostile situations, as Ryujin can quickly evaluate the opponents’ ability and act accordingly.

Relationships

Family

Although not much is known about Ryujin’ biological family, it is mentioned that she grew up in a Nest. We also know that the nest was later raided by a member of the Gyeon Clan, who was most likely murdered by Ryujin as mentioned by Officer Ahn in episode 48.

Jiwon

Ryujin had an extremely intimate relationship with Jiwon as Officer Ahn managed to taunt Ryujin just by mentioning her name. Jiwon often looked out for Ryujin and helped patch up her cap with that iconic x stitch. During the attack of the Corps on the Nest, Jiwon was murdered while Ryujin managed to kill an officer and was imprisoned. Ryujin’s love for Jiwon and the other members of her Nest is so great that she swallowed her pride and joined the Corps in order to get her revenge on Ahn and the Corps.

Aberrant Corps

Ryujin despises the Corps for murdering her family and vows to get revenge by killing every Officer .

After being freed from prison, the Corps continuously monitor Ryujin

She is aware of the organization's corruption, tactics and handling of Aberrants, but she is not easily swayed.

She refuses to be used as a pawn for the Corps so she get by doing the bare minimum and not revealing her abilities

Officer Ahn

Ryujin despises Officer Ahn. It was implied that Ahn took part in torturing Ryujin during her time at the prison.

Juni Chang

Ryujin gets along well with her cell’s mentor, Juni Chang. Juni was completely fine with Ryujin stealing her lighter and found that amusing, she has been sharing her cigarettes with Ryujin ever since. Juni also tolerates Ryujin refusing to participate in practice sessions
